ATAG Boiler – Reviews, Prices & Warranty - A Complete Factory Heaters Guide

Factory Heaters • October 18, 2022

If you're in the market for a new boiler, ATAG Heating is worth considering. We'll review the ATAG boiler range, discuss customer reviews, warranties, and expected installation prices, and compare to similar products on the market.

Are ATAG Boilers Any Good?

Though ATAG may not be as well known in the United Kingdom as brands such as Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Vaillant, and Ideal, that does not mean they are of poor quality. In fact, ATAG has been designing and producing reliable boilers for approximately 70 years. Nowadays, most components are made of stainless steel or brass to ensureATAG produces an appliance you can depend on.

ATAG's boilers are not only some of the most energy-efficient in Europe but also have low emissions. The company has such faith in its product that they offer a warranty for up to 14 years if installed by an accredited ATAG installer.

ATAG Boiler - The Reviews

You won't find nearly as many ATAG boiler reviews in comparison to other brands.

Although they don't have the volume of reviews from some of the more well know boiler brands, we suggest that you read the Trust Pilot reports. There are over 4,100 customer reviews with mostly positive feedback and an average rating of 4.8/5 stars.

When reading the ATAG boiler reviews on Trust Pilot, you'll notice that people aren't just satisfied with the quality of boilers--customer service gets plenty of praise as well. That can't be said for all manufacturers.

Choosing the Correct ATAG Boiler for You

ATAG and most other manufacturers divide their boiler range into three types: combi, system, and regular. You can determine which replacement boiler you need by reading this informative guide on the different types of gas boilers. However, if you don't have time to read it now, we'll give you a brief overview of the available types below:

Combi Boilers

Perfect for smaller homes because they take up less space and are more efficient.

The combi boiler is the most popular type for small to medium-sized properties. Combi boilers don't require hot water cylinders or a cold water feeder tank — their heat exchanger produces hot water on demand whenever you turn on your taps or call for central heating.

If your household doesn't use a lot of hot water, then combi boilers are an excellent option. However, if you find that you regularly need large amounts of hot water, a combi boiler may not be enough to meet your needs. That's because it relies on mains water pressure and can't provide sufficient water if multiple taps or showers are in use at the same time.

Unsure if you have a combi boiler at home? It's easy to figure out: if there is no hot water or feeder tank in the loft, then you have a combination boiler. If you want to replace it with another combi (such as ATAG's iC Economiser range), that would be the cheapest option.

System Boilers

Perfect for high-demand hot water needs.

If you have a large family or entertain guests often, then you need a system boiler. A system boiler heats water that's stored in an insulated hot water tank, so there's always plenty of hot water no matter how many people are using it or the mains pressure.

If you have a hot water cylinder but no feeder tank, your boiler is classified as a system boiler. In this scenario, you could replace your central heating system with a more condensed combi model which saves space. However, keep in mind that combi boilers can't always accommodate extensive hot water usage.

Regular Boilers

The traditional setup with hot water and feeder tanks.

A regular boiler is just like a system boiler, except the hot water cylinder gets filled from a cold water storage tank rather than straight from the mains. So, if you have water tanks in your loft and a hot water storage cylinder, then your existing boiler is definitely a “regular” one.

Although regular boilers are heat-only examples from earlier days, that doesn't automatically mean you should replace it with a system or combi.

If you're satisfied with your current water heater's performance, then there's no need to replace it with a new one. However, if you're looking for an upgrade, consider switching to a brand-new condensing boiler from ATAG Regular iR range. These models are significantly more efficient than older models and will help save on energy costs in the long run.

Keep in mind that switching your boiler to a combi will save you TONS of space. No more cold water feeder tanks or hot water cylinders--a small combi can do it all! Just be aware that there may be reduced water pressure for showers and taps. If you live alone, or have modest hot water usage, this usually isn't an issue.

ATAG Boiler Size

ATAG Combi Boilers are both powerful and reliable, making them the perfect choice for your home. With a variety of models to choose from, we have an ATAG boiler that will fit both your needs and budget. All boilers come with a 2-year guarantee as standard so you can be sure they will work when you need them most.

For now, we'll focus on the ATAG combi boiler, but many of the factors below apply to both system and regular boilers. Just remember the essential differences between them, like that regular boilers have hot and cold water storage while system boilers don't. Also, keep in mind that comibs generally provide lower water pressure.

The most popular model in the ATAG combi boiler range is the ATAG Q-CR Range. This powerful and efficient boiler is perfect for any home, providing hot water and comfortable heating all year round.

ATAG Boiler Size

There are three sizes on offer in the Q-CR Economiser Plus Range:

  • 25kW — ATAG Q25CR
  • 38kW — ATAG Q38CR
  • 51kW — ATAG Q51CR

The 25kW is better suited for small-to-medium-sized properties, whereas the 38kW model is solely designed for medium sized properties. And finally, the 51kW is what you’ll want in a large home with high demand for hot water.

If your property is large, with multiple radiators and often used taps/showers simultaneously, you might need a system boiler instead of a combi.

ATAG Boiler Features

ATAG boilers are equipped with many useful features, such as:

  • The iCon Heat Exchanger is a state-of-the-art device that can help you save money on your energy bills.

The ATAG iCon heat exchanger is unique in that its efficiency does not drop with time. In fact, it has been shown to maintain efficiency of 98% as time passes. This heat exchanger is able to withstand intense heat, constant pressure, limescale buildup, and other punishing conditions that would typically wear out a normal heat exchanger quickly.

In other words, ATAG is telling us their heat exchanger will last a long time. But we don't have to just take their word for it — they offer a LIFETIME guarantee on the part. Which is great news considering that new heat exchangers usually cost over £500.

  • Weather Compensator

The weather compensator is a feature that allows ATAG boilers to adjust according to the current weather conditions. The goal of this is to make the boiler more efficient, and over time with lead to smaller energy bills. Most models have this feature, but not all of them do.

Detailed Fault Codes

Instead of showing you vague and unhelpful error codes, the ATAG boilers from the Economiser series have LCD displays that give clear and concise fault codes. This way, you can get accurate help from qualified heating engineers as soon as possible instead of wasting time online trying to figure out what is wrong with your boiler.

Compact Dimensions

The boilers produced by ATAG are all compact in size, so you can easily tuck one away in a kitchen cupboard.

Smartphone Controls

The ATAG ONE app can be installed on your smartphone to control your boiler from virtually anywhere.

Frost Protection

All condensing boilers are prone to freezing in colder months because of their Achilles’ Heel - the condensate pipe. This pipe drains the condensate liquid produced by the boiler to an external drain. If this pipe becomes blocked, it can prevent the liquid from draining properly and cause serious problems for your boiler.

If a boiler's frozen condensate pipe doesn't allow liquid to flow, the boiler usually shuts down. If this happens to you on a cold day, you'll have to go outside and thaw out the pipe yourself by running warm water over it. Then, you'll have to hope that the pipe doesn't freeze again, causing another blockage and boiler lockout.

This is why ATAG now equips its boiler with a frost protection mechanism. This helps you avoid costly and time-consuming repairs by keeping your pipes from freezing.

ATAG Boiler Warranty

We appreciate the lengthy warranties that come with ATAG boilers. standardly, every boiler has a 10-year warranty, and if you use an ATAG-accredited installer, then the iC Economiser range is covered for 14 years.

ATAG boilers also come with a heat exchanger that has a lifetime replacement guarantee, unlike other brands that only offer 2 years (or in some cases, 1 year) of coverage.

We believe that if a manufacturer could afford to offer a warranty longer than 2 years, they would. If they don't have confidence in their product's longevity, then we don't either. At the very least, when investing the kind of money usually needed for boiler installation, we recommend opting for one with a 5-year warranty; ATAG boasts an even longer lifespan.

ATAG Boiler Energy Efficiency

While many people only consider the warranty and price when buying a new boiler, something else worth thinking about is how energy efficient it is. ATAG heating offers some of the most energy-efficient boiler models on the market.

ATAG boilers are not only some of the most efficient on the market - they're actually better than most. All modern boilers come with a flue gas recovery system, which recycles waste gases into energy to create heat. But models like ATAG's Economiser use this recycled gas twice, meaning their efficiency is increased.

All ATAG boiler models are A-rated, meaning you’ll immediately save on your energy bills compared with an older boiler that does not have the same rating. According to the Energy Saving Trust, it could be as much as £840 per year in savings. Considering most boiler finance companies offer deals from around £25 per month, it means that a new boiler pays for itself quickly and then some.

ATAG Boiler Prices

ATAG boilers are incredibly powerful, and efficient, and come with amazing warranties. You'll never have to worry about your central heating system or hot water again!

So, how do ATAG boiler prices compare to other leading brands?

The only downside to ATAG boilers is that they are not as cheap to install as you might think. In fact, they are comparable in price to Worcester, Vaillant, Baxi, and Ideal.

Because they are not high in demand, plumbing merchants do not typically stock ATAG boilers. This means that if a customer requests one, the merchant will have to order it specifically for them at an increased cost. I worked at a plumbing merchant where we sold Worcester/Ideal boilers by the thousands over a two-year period but not even one ATAG boiler.
